The Splurge Buster: Wardrobe Edition
Thinking of getting that Gucci bag? This Notion template will help you detect possible splurges and save you dollars!
Building your dream capsule wardrobe is one thing. But it is another thing to avoid buying the you-thought-you-liked-the-thing!
One way to feel good is to spend money
Based on a study, changes in how we consume things can make a difference to our life satisfaction, as opposed to changes in our income. You can read all about it here. But what it means in an oversimplistic view is that to be happier with money will depend on how we spend it, not so much on how much we earn.
I am far from being a millionaire now. But, it doesn't always mean I live frugally. It can also mean I am willing to spend on extravagant things (like this pair of Saint Laurent Suede Chelsea Boots in black). With that being said, I’m here to tell you that IT’S OKAY TO SPEND A LOT OF MONEY ON SOMETHING YOU REALLY LIKE! But there is a catch.
How will I know that I won't regret what I will buy and feel like sh*t after, but make me happier instead?
This is especially true when it is an expensive item. I have found a simple solution. Though it is not a one-size-fits-all solution (see what I did there? Wardrobe? One-size-fits-all?) to all my spending problems, it has been incredibly effective in building the conviction I need that, if purchased, it is going to make me happier. That is: delaying the purchase.
By delaying getting the things I want, I am building suspense. The suspense creates a sense of anticipation of buying it and the amplified excitement as I hit that purchase button. For that reason, I created this Notion template to systematically help me (and hopefully, you) improve our spending decision, keep us from regretting, and making us happier.
How does this template work?
Pretty simple!
- Browse and add items that, at the time, excite you to the template and fill in some info according to the provided properties (like its pictures, link, and price);
- Set the hold date and reminder to the next 30-days for each item since the date that you put it in;
- Wait until you receive a reminder notification that the 30-days have lapsed for the item you put in. That's when you BUY IT! 💳🎉🪩💸💃🕺
Why will it work?
There are always new things that I want to add as I go. It is also when I take a second glance at what I have put in. When a particular item does not give me the same excitement as I once put it, it's a good sign that I don't quite like it—an indication of potential splurging when bought. In that case, I deleted it from the list. That is when I save my dollars from getting things that I-thought-I-liked 👏
Plus, we are a die-hard Notion fan! Adding a new page to your life Wiki won't feel like adding things to your laundry (although buying a new Zegna's Cotton Knit Short-Sleeve Polo Shirt will). It instead helps you spend your dollars for the things that will make you happier.
What will I get from The Splurge Buster template?
🤩 Wardrobe Database Template: build and add your wardrobe pieces per occasion to see how they play out in each occasion
🤩 Price: add price, set quantity and automatically see total price of each item in your wardrobe (and your total dream wardrobe)
🤩 Status Tracker: see when you’re “allowed” to buy and receive notifications when you can go ahead and get that item
P.s.: Once bought, the template you will get is a copy of my Splurge Buster (as of August 2022). I intentionally leave some of my personal wish list so you can see examples of how it works on the get-go (and probably could help you kick start your wardrobe inspiration). You can delete all of the items therein to start fresh.
